Differences between a food allergy and a food intolerance:
Food allergies occur in people with an overactive immune system producing IgE antibodies to substances in their diet or environment that are otherwise harmless. Allergy testing accesses and detect these IgE antibodies. Acute reactions occur soon after ingestion (anywhere from minutes to 1-2 hours) and vary in severity from mild/ moderate.
Unlike food allergies that cause an immune reaction, food intolerances (IgG) don’t involve the immune system directly and can be hard to detect. Food intolerance reactions are also often delayed. Symptoms can begin within an hour or two, or in some instances can take up to 72 hours.
Food intolerance and allergy testing offers a useful tool alongside an elimination diet for detecting the foods causing this response, as they can provide a great starting point for your elimination diet. However, as these tests can be prone to false negatives and false positives, it is advised not to rely solely on testing, but combining both the test and an elimination diet for the best possible outcome.
Please note this is a blood test, you will be provided with the appropriate forms to take to your local pathology lab to complete this test.
